Sometimes in life, the opportunities we didn't even knew we needed tend to arise in some very mysterious (or surprising) ways. They often come disguised in the form of a major failure, disappointment, or situation completely out of our control that gives us the impression we're victims of life's unknowable consequences.
But here's an alternate perspective ... without the dark, how would we ever see the stars?
My husband Dan is the ultimate cliché: he literally grew up boating. As a toddler, age 3, he was shrouded in the lifestyle. By age 22, he bought his own. So, it might not come as a surprise that today, he’s a registered Master Captain and recently purchased his fourth boat.
As for me? I’ve loved the ocean for as long as I can remember; those of you who grew up on the East Coast can probably relate. But once Dan and I started dating, I realized that the nostalgic love for the beach atmosphere was actually a passion for boating and the open ocean.
From that point on, our lives were full – in the best ways:
Weekends in Point Pleasant, sunset cruises, annual July 4th boat parties, Silver Bay, F Cove, and the Metedeconk River. Our summers were both literally and figuratively anchored in happiness.
Our go-to vacation?
An ocean cruise with a balcony view.
A sunset sailboat cruise out of Sandy Hook, NJ.
Our wedding venue?
A yacht cruising up the Hudson River in NYC!
Eastern Caribbean Cruise!
But even though those moments ended up being some of the happiest of our lives, they almost didn’t happen at all. Just months before our wedding, I received a call: the wedding planning company we were using for most of our vendors, including the yacht venue, went bankrupt.
Every bride’s ultimate worst nightmare, right? It actually got worse...
Here we are tying the knot on board the Majesty! Keeping the ceremony as nautical as they come!

They weren't returning our substantial deposit, and would not be performing any services that were agreed upon in the contract signed 6 months prior. We were one of almost 20 clients who were all in the same boat. After working out our strategy to proceed with our wedding as planned, having one of the most memorable days of our lives, and leaving for our honeymoon, Dan and I had an epiphany …
